SDG6 Clean water and sanitation

Updated: Jul 5

How companies and organizations can contribute to the SDG6 clean water and sanitation?

This includes business and investment actions that develop water, hygiene and sanitation infrastructure and prevent risks related to water, such as to unsafe drinking water.

Fresh water is quickly becoming a scarce resource creating water crisis in many parts of the world. By the UN, clean water and sanitation is a human right. However, water and sanitation remains a luxury for many, according to the Water For People organization. COVID-19 made us to realize how crucial handwashing is as a first defense mechanism against the virus. Washing hands literally saves lives. Approximately 1/3 of people don’t have access to safe drinking water or clean water in general.

Businesses can help to close inequality gaps by investing in accessibility, availability and quality of water and hygiene materials and training. Creating water management strategies for their business operations and value chain is the very first step that companies can take to help tackling the water crisis. Water management strategies manage risks and ensure water efficiency as well as appropriate waste management.

Businesses can take an advocacy role in managing water by investing in innovation, research and technology or increasing awareness and education on the urgency of the water crisis. There are countless opportunities for companies and organizations to contribute to the SDG6.
